5 Steps to Solve the Problem of Your Ukulele Neck Strap Slipping Off

Is your ukulele neck strap sliding off while you play?

"I'm trying to enjoy playing, but my neck strap keeps slipping off my shoulder and I can't concentrate..." Have you ever experienced this? Because ukuleles are light and compact, straps can be difficult to stabilize, and many people struggle with them sliding off.

At 708works, we are a brand based in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, where we handcraft each of our instrument straps one by one. Every day, we hear from many ukulele enthusiasts asking for tips on how to prevent their straps from slipping. In this article, we will explain the specific steps to resolve this problem in an easy-to-follow STEP format.

Understand the causes of a sliding neck strap

Before taking measures, understanding "why it slides" will help you solve the problem faster. The three main causes are as follows:

  • The contact surface of the strap is made of a slippery material (such as nylon or smooth synthetic fibers)
  • The ukulele itself is light, making it difficult to maintain tension
  • Neck straps are prone to swaying side-to-side because they are supported by only one point behind the neck

Based on these causes, let's take measures one by one.

5 steps to prevent sliding

STEP 1: Choose a strap with a non-slip contact surface

The first thing to reconsider is the material of the strap itself. Straps with a surface made of leather that touches your shoulder or neck have a better grip than synthetic fibers, making them less likely to slide off. Cowhide, in particular, conforms to the body the more you use it, reducing slippage.

STEP 2: Adjust the length to a "position that fits your body"

If the strap is too long, the range of sway increases, leading to slippage. Regularly adjust the length so that the ukulele rests in the center of your body or slightly higher. Once your playing posture becomes stable, you will be surprised at how much less it slips.

STEP 3: Switch from a neck strap to a "two-point support type"

Actually, this is the most effective way to fundamentally solve the problem of sliding. Switching from a neck strap, which is supported by a single point behind the neck, to a two-point support strap that is securely held by both shoulders and your back, drastically reduces swaying. Since the weight balance is stable, you can play comfortably even while standing.

We highly recommend kolmio for ukulele, which features beautiful organic curves that resemble fish scales. Its unique shape, formed by a chain of triangular parts, offers the distinct grip of genuine leather, keeping it firmly in place on your shoulder while you play.

STEP 4: Use an attachment for instruments with only one strap pin

Many people probably have a ukulele with only one (or zero) strap pins. Trying to support it only with a neck strap tends to make it unstable. In such cases, using the Onstage Attachment, which allows you to attach a strap to instruments with only one pin, lets you switch to two-point support without modifying the instrument itself.

STEP 5: Keep the leather in good condition regularly

When leather straps dry out, the surface can harden and become slippery. Wiping them with a dry cloth occasionally or applying a light treatment with a dedicated leather cream will help maintain that supple, grippy feel for a long time.

An option for a lighter, hardware-free strap

For those who are bothered by metal hardware touching their body or who prefer a lighter feel, we also recommend the Wellington for ukulele, which uses a design completely free of metal hardware. Its soft, scale-like curves conform to the body, allowing even a light ukulele to fit naturally. Combined with its stylish design, it’s a strap that makes the very act of playing more enjoyable.

Free yourself from the stress of sliding straps and enjoy playing

The sliding of a neck strap can definitely be improved by reconsidering the material, length, and support method. Switching from "one-point support to two-point support," in particular, is a change many people wish they had made sooner.

708works straps are crafted by artisans, one by one, by hand. We hope you will find one that firmly and beautifully supports your ukulele companion. You will surely appreciate the comfort of being able to concentrate fully on your playing.
